Sexual assault is a traumatic experience. One way to start the healing process is to talk about it. The Lennoxville & District Women’s Centre has a trained counsellor and a confidential, safe place to meet. Our counsellor understands what you are going through, and she will listen and respect your privacy. She can help.
What is sexual assault?
It is an act of domination, violence, and abusive power. Sexual assault is most often committed against women and children.
Sexual assault can take many different forms:
- rape
- incest
- date rape
- sexual harassment, stalking
- exhibitionism, voyeurism
- obscene telephone calls
- sexual touching
- exploitation of people for pornographic purposes
- sexual assault in an institutional setting
- rape by a partner
- gang rape
Did you know?
- In Quebec, 87,000 women (aged 15 years and older) are victims of sexual assault each year.
- The majority of sexual assault victims are women and children.
- 98.5% of people charged with sexual assault are men.
- 80% of the victims know their aggressor.
- 85% of the victims experience trauma.
- Only 6% of all sexual assaults are reported to the police.
- 1 in 7 women has been raped at least once by a partner.
- Handicapped women are at greater risk. As many as 40% have been manhandled, raped, or attacked.
